If you consider yourself a work-a-holic and your kids seem to be growing up before your eyes, then there is no time like the present to start planning for a vacation with your kids where you can leave behind your laptop and cell phone and spend quality time with the ones you love. Summer vacations for families come in every shape and size from the ultra expensive and luxurious stay at Disney World to pitching a tent at a national park and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors. There is a perfect vacation for you to plan. All it takes is coming together with your family to decide what everyone would like to do on vacation, a little bit of money and a lot of imagination and you come up with a dream vacation perfect for your family.
If you would like your children to get more in touch with nature, plan a vacation to the great outdoors. Do a little research in your area to see what national parks are close enough so the drive isn’t unbearable, but far enough away to where you feel like you are escaping all of reality, if only for a few days. Make sure you have enough equipment and the modern conveniences to make even the biggest city slicker comfortable. Get a good quality tent and temperature appropriate sleeping bags. The temperature can drop rapidly in the evening, and nothing is worse than being cold and out in the middle of nowhere. Make sure you bring all of the fixings for smores to roast over an open fire. Do a little research to make sure that bears and wild animals (like coyotes) are not prone to scavenging the areas. If they are, make sure you keep your food locked tight in your car. Bring fun activities for your kids to do, such as fishing poles to keep them occupied. Many national parks offer canoe rentals, which is always fun to do as a family.
If you don’t think that you are quite cut out for roughing it in the forest, you can still enjoy the outdoors while staying inside at night. Find a resort or cabin that is set by a lake or in the forest. This type of accommodation will allow you to enjoy your beautiful surroundings while still being able to enjoy the modern conveniences of home. With the proper research, you can find beautiful, rustic cabins available to rent. Most searches on the internet will give you a large amount of pictures to get a better idea of what you can expect. A bit of advice: if you do not see pictures ahead of time and you consider yourself the “indoor” type, don’t rent this place; chances are there is a reason why the pictures aren’t shown! Regardless of where you stay or visit, summer vacations for families are the stuff which dreams and memories are made of. Your kids will remember this time for many years to come.

Cruises were once a vacation designed and designated mostly for the older generation, where afternoons were spent playing gin and shuffle board on the deck. Well, cruises have come a long, long way in the age demographic and now more families are opting to take cruises for the adventure as well as the all-inclusive amenities that cruise ships provide. Many cruise line focus entirely on relating and entertaining families. They offer children’s clubs which will allow the parents to go off and enjoy some of the ships amenities not necessarily geared towards a child’s enjoyment. These clubs keep your child busy from sun up to sun down with hours of arts and crafts, games, swimming and story time making it a wonderful summer vacation for families.
The Disney Company saw that the market was faltering a bit in the family cruise demographic and decided to profit off of it and make a regular Disneyland on the Sea. The Disney Cruise line is a virtual wonderland of all things Disney magic. Adults and children of all ages love this cruise line. There are incredible shows throughout the day and night that will leave you wondering how on earth they managed to do that on a cruise ship out in the middle of the sea. Disney characters are there to greet you around every corner delighting young children everywhere. The food, like on any other cruise line is to die for, but the Disney Company makes sure that their menu includes foods that will appeal to every Disney fanatic; Mickey Mouse shaped macaroni, pancakes and waffles can be found at all hours of the day or night. One of the most incredible parts of the Disney cruise is the stop at the Disney owned private Caribbean island where you will spend your day doing water sports, swimming in the lagoon, getting your hair braided or a multitude of other activities on this gorgeous beach.
Summer vacations for families can be incredible if you decide to take them on a cruise. If your children are a bit too old for a Disney cruise, or if you would like a cruise with a little more relaxation and not so much chaotic energy, there are a multitude of other cruise lines. These cruises will still offer the very best in luxuriousness and relaxation for the adults while still allowing plenty of activities like swimming, arcades plus a plethora of other opportunities for the kids that will keep them busy, occupied and out of your hair from sun up to sun down.

There are so many incredible summer vacation places that you can experience in the country. Regardless if you live on the west coast, east coast or anywhere in between, there are sites and destinations for every budget that will build memories that will last a lifetime. Look into the surrounding region where you live to get a better idea of the places you can visit with your family. If your budget allows for you to fly somewhere, the opportunities are endless, but if you must drive to your vacation destination, plan wisely and make sure that the place you choose will be worth the long drive.
With school being out for summer, your kids are going to want to go and have some fun. After being cooped up inside of a classroom all year long, make sure you choose a vacation destination that will let them explore the outdoors with enough room to run and stretch their legs. Renting a house on a lake or beach is a great idea for families with older children. You have the water of the lake that will give you the opportunity to swim, boat and do other water sports plus the comforts of a cabin or lake house for the modern conveniences of home. Your children will spend hours outside building sandcastles or chasing fireflies, creating memories every minute of their vacation.
If a theme park vacation is your idea of fun, there are so many that you can choose from. Disneyland is the obvious number one choice for theme parks, but you will get the big crowds and emotional meltdowns with this park (not to mention an empty wallet when the visit is over). If a Disney trip just isn’t in the cards, try a Six Flags or Busch Gardens resort. For a theme park plus a sea life adventure, try visiting a Sea World. There is one on either coast, so there is a location close to you to enjoy incredible sea life, amazing shows and thrilling rides all in one. There are so many summer vacation places you can choose to visit. Deciding on the right place will be the tough decision!

If you want to go on a family vacation, but do not have any real ideas of where exactly you would like to go…go straight to the source and ask your kids where they want to go! No doubt they will give you 101 summer vacation ideas that are fun, imaginative and worth planning for! A good idea, if you have a lot of kids, is for all of them to put their vacation ideas on paper and have you put them all into a hat, then you draw out one idea and that is the vacation that you will go on! If they are old enough, make sure they understand that there are rules that apply to this game and that a trip to the Moon or a jaunt to the Eiffel Tower in Paris is probably not realistic!
When you are planning for a vacation with your family, it is important to make sure that you go someplace where there are plenty of activities for your kids to do. It does not have to be a place where there is an activity every minute of the day that costs a small fortune to go and do, but it should be someplace where they will not be bored. There is nothing worse than going somewhere with a whiny child. It will make the vacation bad for you, your children and for the other people around you. If you are going to a place that could be boring for a child, make sure you pack activities for them to do to pass the time away.
It may be helpful on your part to point your kids in the right direction with certain suggestions as to where they might like to go on vacation. Give them guidelines of what is a real expectation and what is out of the question. If you come to a decision as a group to go camping, do a little research on the internet to find camping sites and national parks that are within a reasonable driving distance and have your family decide which site they would like to go and visit. You can give your kids some summer vacation ideas about what these facilities offer such as swimming, boating, hiking, etc. Make sure there is something for every member of your family to enjoy so no one is left out.
